Bvlgari's Inspirations

Bvlgari's Iconic Design Elements

Bvlgari, a renowned Italian luxury jewelry house, has a rich history deeply rooted in the Eternal City, Rome. The brand's iconic designs draw inspiration from Roman architecture, history, and culture, creating timeless pieces that celebrate the beauty and elegance of the past. Let's explore some of Bvlgari's most distinctive design elements.

1. Serpenti:

The Terra Mater Serpenti Necklace

In 1948, inspired by ancient Roman snake armlets from the 1st century, Bvlgari pioneered Tubogas technology in watchmaking, creating a serpentine watch with a supple, flexible metal band. This groundbreaking design marked the birth of the iconic Serpenti collection.

4. Floral Motifs

Flowers have been a recurring theme in Bvlgari's designs since 1917. The brand's floral jewels, such as the iconic Trémblant brooch, capture the beauty and delicacy of nature. The Fiorever collection, launched in 2018, is a contemporary interpretation of Bvlgari's floral heritage.

5. Tubogas

Tubogas is a flexible metal tubing that was first patented in 1881. After World War II, when platinum, diamonds, and gemstones became scarce and Art Deco jewelry fell out of favor, gold and new materials became the preferred choices for jewelry making. In the 20th century, with rapid advancements in science and technology, jewelers drew inspiration from the design of industrial hoses that were emerging at the time, leading to the discovery and application of Tubogas technology in jewelry.

Bvlgari Icons Tubogas

As the use of Tubogas technology in the jewelry industry grew, so too did the popularity of Tubogas-style jewelry. With Paris as the fashion capital of the world, global trends were heavily influenced by the French. Bvlgari also began to explore Tubogas-style jewelry. The born of Bvlgari’s Seroenti Tubogas watch marked the beginning of a new era in jewelry.

6. Roman Ancient Coins

In the 19th century, archaeological excavations were all the rage. Nicola Bvlgari, a passionate coin collector, introduced the concept of incorporating ancient coins into jewelry in the 1960s. The coins were preserved in their original state, with settings custom-made to fit their unique contours. This innovative design became a hallmark of Bvlgari's collections.

The brand's association with royalty and Hollywood icons further solidified the appeal of its ancient coin jewelry. In 1977, Grace Kelly was gifted a Bvlgari necklace featuring ancient Roman coins, and Elizabeth Taylor became a devoted collector. These historical connections, combined with Bvlgari's commitment to preserving the beauty of ancient artifacts, have made ancient coins a timeless element in the brand's designs.

7. The Travertine Patterns

In the 1980s, Bvlgari recognized the need for a jewelry collection designed for modern working women in response to the growing demand for versatile jewelry that could be worn. The solution was modular jewelry, where each element was designed and manufactured to the highest quality, allowing for mass production, hand

Bvlgari's first modular jewelry collection was Parentesi, inspired by the travertine stone used to connect blocks in the streets of Rome. The Parentesi motif is a direct reference to the travertine joints that are so characteristic of the Eternal City.

8. Trombino Ring

The Trombino ring, a Bvlgari classic that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, is characterized by its unique design. The ring features a diamond-studded band with a finely pierced metal plate set into the base. A larger colored gemstone or diamond is elevated on a higher setting within this plate, flanked by a row of rectangular-shaped diamonds.
